The largest cranial implant is installed in Chile: it is made of synthetic bone

During the first quarter of this year, a 10-year-old patient successfully received the largest cranial implant in the country. In the operation, 350 cm2 of artificial bone developed in Chile through a 3D modeling and printing system were implanted. The piece covers a large part of the patient’s head and was provided by the national startup ArcomedLab.

Given the size of the prosthesis, this latest generation technology, which responds very well and behaves similar to natural bone, was chosen. “We work with models designed on the basis of biocompatible polymers that do not generate any effect on the human body,” explains Ilan Rosenberg, general manager of ArcomedLab. The printing technique they use to create the implants, which is different from sculpting, allows all kinds of sizes and geometries to be obtained.
